Whispers of poetry drift on the wind. Before you stands Hitomaru Shrine a place steeped in history and legend.

This is the shrine dedicated to Kakinomoto no Hitomaro one of Japan’s greatest poets. His poems are found in the Manyoshu the oldest collection of Japanese poetry. Hitomaru’s life remains shrouded in mystery. We know he died in Masuda. This shrine honors his legacy.

Legend says the shrine was initially on Kamoshima Island. A tsunami destroyed it in 1026. Only Hitomaru’s statue survived. It floated to Matsuzaki. The shrine was rebuilt there. Later in 1681 the shrine moved to its current location. This allowed the lord of nearby Tsuwano easy access.

Many people visit Hitomaru Shrine. They come to honor Hitomaro and seek poetic inspiration. The shrine boasts art from emperors and the Imperial court. A statue of Hitomaru sits under a plum tree. He holds his paper and brush ready for inspiration.

The annual Hassaku Festival celebrates Hitomaru’s birthday on September 1. Thrilling yabusame horseback archery takes place by the riverside. The festival is a vibrant celebration.

Hitomaru Shrine is more than a place of worship. It is a living testament to a poet’s enduring spirit. It is a place where poetry lives and breathes. It is a sacred space where you too can connect with the beauty of words. Take a moment to feel the spirit of this sacred place. Feel the weight of history. Let the words of Hitomaru resonate within you.
