Gazing across the serene Flamingo Lake in Ecoparque, a peculiar sight commands attention. It’s the Hito de Frontera installation by Carlos Huffman. A vibrant yellow armadillo, a tatú carreta, perched atop an overturned car, surveys its surroundings. This isn’t your typical equestrian statue. The animal is on top, symbolizing a shift in power dynamics. The human element, represented by the crushed car and scattered bricks, lies below. Hito de Frontera, meaning “boundary marker”, was originally located in Plaza Intendente Seeber. Its relocation to Ecoparque, the former Buenos Aires Zoo, adds another layer to its meaning. The sculpture, made of polyester resin, pigment, metal, and wood, explores the concept of boundaries. These boundaries exist not only between nations but also between species, the present, and the future. Huffman intended the piece to be both emphatic and unsettling. He later described it as an inverted equestrian statue, highlighting the reversed roles of human and animal. The bright yellow of the armadillo is no accident. It’s the color used in road signs for high visibility, further emphasizing the idea of demarcation and boundaries. The Ecoparque setting, with its history as a zoo, provides a poignant backdrop for Hito de Frontera. It prompts reflection on the boundaries we create, our responsibilities to other species, and the interconnectedness of the natural world. The stones piled beneath the car further evoke traditional boundary markers found in mountainous regions. They serve as a reminder of the physical and symbolic lines that divide us.
