Why did Mainz go without a proper town hall for five centuries? The Historisches Rathaus, as some call it, stands as a testament to this unusual gap in Mainz’s history. Before we admire this modern structure, let’s journey back to 1462. Following the Mainz Stiftsfehde, Adolf of Nassau dissolved the city council. Mainz was then governed by representatives of the Archbishop and Elector. For 500 years, Mainz functioned without a central Rathaus. City council meetings took place in various buildings, often referred to as “Stadthaus”. The idea of a new Rathaus wasn’t seriously considered until the 1930s. Even then, plans were drawn up, influenced by Kühle’s classicism and the monumental style of Nazi architecture. These plans, thankfully, never materialized. After World War II, the damaged city center underwent extensive reconstruction. Finally, in 1968, after a Europe-wide competition, the Danish firm of Jacobsen and Weitling were commissioned to design the new Historisches Rathaus. This marked a new chapter, ending Mainz’s 500-year “Rathaus-less” period. The building was officially inaugurated on December 31, 1973, a momentous occasion for the city. It’s interesting to note that the first Mainz Rathaus, a Gothic structure with a steep, oriel-adorned gable, was mentioned as early as 1277. It stood near the city wall. Sadly, it was demolished in the 19th century, the last remnants removed in 1974 during the construction of this very building. Now we stand before a striking example of post-war modernism. The Historisches Rathaus contributes to an impressive complex alongside the Brandzentrum, the Hilton Hotel, and the Rheingoldhalle.
