Built in 1913, the Historisches Depot 1913 whispers stories of Karlsruhe’s transport past. This isn’t just a depot. It’s a time capsule. The Historisches Depot 1913, located on Tullastraße, originally served as Depot II for the Verkehrsbetriebe Karlsruhe (VBK). Today, it houses a fascinating collection of historic trams, buses, and service vehicles. The Treffpunkt Schienennahverkehr Karlsruhe (TSNV) association opens the depot to the public once a month. Imagine stepping back in time as you explore the exhibits. The depot’s modern exterior, renovated in the 1980s, belies its age. The original steel-reinforced concrete construction, innovative for its time, has allowed the Historisches Depot 1913 to stand the test of time. Inside, you’ll find both permanent and rotating exhibits. The permanent collection includes gems like Bus 318, a Standard-I Bus O 305, and TW 14, the “Accumulator Tram.” You can also see TW 92, the “Residenz Tram,” currently under restoration. Other fascinating vehicles include TW 114, a wartime tram, and TW 121, an electro-pneumatically controlled articulated tram now converted into a sales booth for the TSNV. From April to October, the depot opens its doors every second Sunday of the month, offering visitors a glimpse into Karlsruhe’s rich transportation history. Informative display boards throughout the Historisches Depot 1913 detail the evolution of public transport in the city. While exploring, you might discover the TW 495, the “Accident Assistance Tram,” or the TW 497 snowplow. There’s even a replica of a “Directly Controlled” tram front. You can purchase books and souvenirs from the TSNV, making your visit to the Historisches Depot 1913 a truly memorable experience.
