A melodic church bell. That’s how it all began. Before you stands the Historic First United Methodist Church of Rockwall. Its story echoes through time. Imagine the small 16×20 foot structure. Built of native timber from the East Fork Trinity River bottom. It served as the first place of worship for this congregation back in 1856. A simple building with a belfry and a high steeple. Its bell called people to worship in what was then just a village.
The Historic First United Methodist Church of Rockwall wasn’t always here on this spot. For years it moved from the Old Masonic Building and Butler School to its first proper home. That building was on the northeast corner of Rusk and Fannin Streets. A modest plot of land. Purchased for the remarkably low sum of $100. A testament to the deep faith of the community. They gave the money “for the love that we bear for the cause of Christ”. They wanted to promote His heritage on earth.
Years passed. The congregation grew. Rev Wheeler started a subscription. They aimed for $8000 to build a new church. Sadly they fell short. But the dream persisted. In 1912 a building committee was elected. Faithful members donated beautiful stained glass windows. These windows are now treasured in the lobby of Building A. The completed church cost $19000. A significant sum at the time. That building still stands today on Rockwall square. It’s a stunning example of Mission/Spanish Revival architecture.
The Historic First United Methodist Church of Rockwall’s story continues. In 1979 construction began on a new site at 1408 South Goliad Road. Raymond and Elizabeth Cameron generously donated the land. The first service in this new sanctuary was held on March 22 1981. Later additions included a Fellowship Hall and Music/Education wings. The church kept growing.
Another move came in 2002. Groundbreaking began for the current location on East Yellow Jacket Lane. Amazingly it’s still on land given by Raymond and Elizabeth Cameron. The current sanctuary which holds 1100 people opened on January 3 2016. An Open Door Worship Center seating 400 opened later in March 2016.
The Historic First United Methodist Church of Rockwall shows its commitment to expanding. A capital campaign added more parking and connected the buildings. This construction finished in August 2023. So here you stand before a place of enduring faith. Its story unfolds before you a testament to community and devotion. A story that continues to grow with each passing year. The legacy of the Historic First United Methodist Church of Rockwall lives on.
