High above the city of Kassel stands the Hirzstein a 502-meter-high mountain spur. This isn’t just any hill. It’s a place steeped in history nature and breathtaking views.

The Hirzstein is part of the Hohe Habichtswald a range of hills in northern Hesse. Its location is truly special. It sits southwest of the Kassel district Brasselsberg yet rises above Elgershausen Hoof and the former mining settlement Firnsbachtal all part of the Schauenburg community.

Imagine the Hirzstein centuries ago a landscape untouched by modern development. This area was once a significant basalt quarry. The stone from here was even used to build the Hercules monument a Kassel landmark. The remains of this quarrying are visible today creating dramatic cliffs and adding to the Hirzstein’s unique character.

But the Hirzstein’s story extends beyond its geological features. It’s a protected area. It is a designated nature reserve since 1979. The area boasts amazing biodiversity. It’s home to the rare eagle owl and peregrine falcon. These magnificent birds nest among the rocky outcrops and ancient forests. A network of trails allows hikers to explore the area and appreciate its natural beauty.

One of the Hirzstein’s highlights is its viewpoint. Located slightly southwest of the summit. It offers incredible panoramic views. You can see the distant Langenberg mountains parts of Baunatal and Schauenburg including its own Burgberg. On a clear day you might even spot the Knüllgebirge in the distance. A unique feature here is the Hirzstein telescope post. It is fitted with 22 telescopes. Each is aimed at a specific landmark. Every landmark is engraved with its name and distance on its respective telescope.

Nearby sits the Teufelsmauer or Devil’s Wall. This natural basalt formation is part of a smaller former quarry. It’s a testament to the area’s geological history. It formed when rising molten magma cooled within the softer Habichtswald basalt tuff. This unique wall is roughly 30 meters long 8 to 10 meters high and almost 90 centimeters thick. Its natural beauty adds to the overall charm of the Hirzstein area.

So here we stand at the Hirzstein. It’s more than just a mountain. It is a protected haven for wildlife a historical site and a place of stunning natural beauty. The Hirzstein embodies the spirit of Kassel a blend of history nature and human ingenuity. It’s a place that invites exploration and discovery. Take a moment to appreciate the view the history and the amazing story of the Hirzstein.
