Completed in 2000, Hiroshima Municipal Motomachi Senior High School is a unique blend of innovative design and artistic expression. Designed by Hiroshi Hara, this school stands just north of Hiroshima Castle. Its location offers a beautiful backdrop for the students. The school’s “Creative Expression Course” is a testament to its focus on the arts. Galleries and art classrooms line a dedicated zone within the school. The building itself is a work of art. A large, open pilotis on the first floor extends upwards, connecting the school to the surrounding environment. The south-facing curtain wall reflects the greenery and sky, creating a calming and inspiring atmosphere. Hiroshima Municipal Motomachi Senior High School has a unique layout. Regular classrooms, or “residences,” are located on the top floor. Specialized classrooms, referred to as “work” spaces, are on the lower floors. This design encourages students to move throughout the building. A dedicated escalator facilitates safe and efficient movement between the “residence” and “work” areas. Hiroshima Municipal Motomachi Senior High School played a vital role in the 2023 Hiroshima Summit. Five second-year students from the Creative Expression Course designed the official logo for the Hiroshima Summit Prefectural Civic Conference. Their design, featuring a dove in flight against a backdrop of origami, symbolized peace and the hopes of Hiroshima. The logo incorporated 23 patches of origami paper, representing the 23 cities and towns in Hiroshima Prefecture. The accompanying catchphrase, “From here to the world, From here to the future,” embodied Hiroshima’s message of peace for future generations. This contribution by the students of Hiroshima Municipal Motomachi Senior High School highlights the school’s commitment to creativity, community engagement, and global peace.
