Hırka-i Şerif Camii

Whispers of reverence follow the Hırka-i Şerif Camii, a mosque holding a sacred treasure. This mosque, nestled in the Fatih district of Istanbul, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s the guardian of the Holy Mantle, a relic believed to have belonged to the Prophet Muhammad himself. Commissioned by Sultan Abdulmejid I, the Hırka-i Şerif Camii’s construction began in 1847. The mosque was completed in 1851, becoming a sanctuary for the precious relic. The mantle, also known as the Hırka-i Şerif, was gifted to Uwais al-Qarani, a revered 7th-century Islamic figure from Yemen. This gift created a powerful link between the Prophet and those who followed his teachings. The mantle eventually found its way to Istanbul in the early 17th century under the rule of Sultan Ahmed I. It was carefully preserved by the descendants of Uwais al-Qarani. The Hırka-i Şerif Camii was designed with the relic in mind. A small, octagonal annex was built specifically to house the mantle, attached to the qibla wall of the mosque. The mosque itself is also octagonal, its dome stretching 11.50 meters across. The architectural style reflects the influence of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem. The relic has been displayed for centuries, typically during Ramadan. Originally, men and women had separate viewing times. Now, visitors of all genders can experience the profound spiritual significance of the Hırka-i Şerif together. The Hırka-i Şerif Camii stands as a testament to faith and history, a unique mosque dedicated to safeguarding a treasured piece of the past.
