The roar of the crowd. The thunder of hooves. This is the Hippodrome de Pont de Vivaux.

Picture this: 1927. A brand new racecourse opens its gates in the southeast of Marseille. It’s a bold statement a vibrant addition to this bustling city. The Hippodrome de Pont de Vivaux is born. It takes over from the short-lived Saint-Loup site. This new location offers something truly special: urban racing against a backdrop of rolling hills.

Initially only trotting races were held. But soon the Hippodrome de Pont de Vivaux expanded. Flat races and steeplechase events joined the program. A unique eight-shaped steeplechase course was created. The unique urban setting made it unlike any other racecourse in France.

The Hippodrome de Pont de Vivaux wasn’t just about the races. In September 1945 it hosted races to aid those affected by wartime bombings. This act of community support highlights the racecourse’s importance to Marseille’s people. A testament to its role in the city’s spirit.

Significant renovations took place in 1990. A panoramic restaurant was added. Night racing became possible thanks to new track lighting. Then in 2009 another major improvement happened. The flat track was transformed into an all-weather fibrous sand track. This innovation extended the racing season. Now races at the Hippodrome de Pont de Vivaux could be held even in winter.

In spring 2017 the grandstand was updated. The improvement included a new owners’ lounge a private terrace and an expanded brasserie.

Today the Hippodrome de Pont de Vivaux boasts a 15-hectare site. It can hold up to 13000 spectators. There are 130 stables for the horses. The races are run counter-clockwise. Popular flat race distances include 1500 2000 and 2600 meters. The red porphyry sand trotting track features 2450 and 2850 meter races.

The Hippodrome de Pont de Vivaux isn’t just a place for racing. It’s a hub of activity. It’s a community space offering a unique blend of urban excitement and natural beauty. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Marseille. A place where history and thrilling competition intertwine. The Hippodrome de Pont de Vivaux.
