Standing on the corner of 75th Street and Clarendon Hills Road in Darien, a southwestern suburb of Chicago, you’ll find yourself in the heart of Hornet country. This is Hinsdale South High School. Founded in 1965, Hinsdale South opened its doors to 418 freshmen and sophomores. The school might not be old, but its impact is undeniable.

Back in 1962, people in the area voted to create a second high school in the community. Over the years, Hinsdale South has grown and evolved, building a new wing just for the Science department in 2003. Today, Hinsdale South is part of the Hinsdale Township High School District 86, which also includes Hinsdale Central High School. This partnership benefits all students in the area, fostering a sense of community and academic excellence.

One of the most interesting things about Hinsdale South is its Deaf and Hard of Hearing program. Since the 1990s, it has offered exceptional support services for students in the DuPage West Cook Regional Program. These services include interpreters, social workers, tutors, and even self-supporting classes taught by teachers with specialized skills.

Hinsdale South isn’t just known for its great academics, it’s got a vibrant athletic program. Students, known as the Hornets, compete in a wide variety of sports, both for men and women, including everything from baseball to water polo. There are even seven gyms and a pool for training and practice. The track and field facilities are pretty impressive too, providing the Hornets with a place to train and strive for that state championship.

So, as you explore this corner of Chicago, take a moment to appreciate the spirit of Hinsdale South, a school that’s full of pride, purpose, and a little bit of Hornet magic.
