The ghostly remains of a sawmill whisper secrets. Hinge Bay holds them. This isn’t just any bay. Hinge Bay is a place etched in time a testament to Auckland’s pioneering past.

Here at Hinge Bay stands a silent monument to the Manukau Timber Company. Their sawmill operated from 1891 to 1895. Imagine the sounds then the rhythmic chop of axes the hiss of steam the creak of wooden structures. The mill was built right on the water’s edge. Concrete pile foundations still remain. So do the foundations of a powerful steam engine. They lie under the trees.

The manager’s house survived the mill’s demise. It’s now part of an outdoor education camp. Think of the stories those walls could tell.

The mill thrived on kauri logs from the Waitakere Ranges. Logs traveled down streams via timber dams. They were collected at the bay’s edge floated to the mill. Then workers hauled them up a ramp. The finished lumber was stacked and shipped from a small wharf. Only small vessels could dock there at high tide. Larger shipments required floating baulks to bigger ships offshore.

The sawmill faced tough competition from a larger mill in Onehunga. That mill had road and rail access. It also had a larger workforce and could handle bigger ships. The Manukau Timber Company couldn’t keep up. It went bankrupt. The equipment was sold and moved to Waitakere.

There’s no sign of sawdust or ash here. The mill likely burned off-cuts for fuel. This is smart-aleck knowledge not obvious at first glance.

After the mill closed Hinge Bay hosted informal settlements. These were removed when the Auckland Regional Council established a regional park in 1972. The remains of the sawmill stand as a reminder. A reminder of the struggles and triumphs of early Auckland. A reminder of the ingenuity and perseverance that shaped this city.

So look closely. See the concrete. Picture the workers. Hear the echoes of a bygone era. Hinge Bay’s story is Auckland’s story. A story of industry resilience and the enduring power of nature.
