Nestled on the shores of the Pahurehure Inlet, Hingaia whispers tales of a rich history. Hingaia is more than just a suburb. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of the Waiohua people. Hingaia Park itself is a beautiful space. It features a striking sculpture of the Waiohua chieftainess, Hingaia. This artwork, created by Te Aakitai Waiohua, acknowledges the cultural significance of the Hingaia Stream and surrounding area. The sculpture’s laser-cut star detailing connects Ranginui, the sky father, with Papatuuanuku, the earth mother. The stars also represent loved ones who have passed, now residing in the night sky. The park’s landscaping is carefully curated with native climbing vines like akapukaea, puawhananga, and kaihua. These vines intertwine with the stars on the sculpture, creating a living, breathing artwork. Other native plants like rengarenga, mikoikoi, pohuehue, napuka, and tuhara further enrich the park’s environment. Hingaia officially became part of Auckland in 2010, during a major local government restructuring. Previously, it was part of the Papakura District. This area saw significant population growth between 2013 and 2023, increasing by over 247%. As of June 2024, Hingaia had an estimated population of 6,210, spread across 6.95 square kilometers. The 2023 census reveals a diverse community. Nearly half identify as European, with significant Māori, Pasifika, and Asian representation. Interestingly, over 42% of residents were born overseas. The census also sheds light on the community’s religious diversity, with Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism represented. A significant portion identify with no religion. Hingaia also boasts excellent educational facilities, including Hingaia Peninsula School, a full primary school, and ACG Strathallan, a private composite school. Hingaia is more than just statistics and demographics. It’s a vibrant community, rich in culture and history. As you explore Hingaia, remember the chieftainess for whom it is named. Her legacy lives on in the land, the people, and the stories that continue to unfold here.
