For decades Hilltop Park thrived. Its 70-foot sundial and amphitheater were the heart of the Bayview neighborhood. The city’s first skatepark also drew crowds. But time took its toll. The park fell into disrepair.
Then came a massive community effort. The Trust for Public Land Rec and Park and the Bayview community joined forces. They envisioned a revitalized park a place for everyone. A $5 million grant made it possible. A further $218 thousand went towards updating the skatepark. Another $500 thousand was for housing-related park improvements.
The transformation was remarkable. The sundial received a brilliant new coat of paint. It now stands proudly. Surrounding it is a grassy area perfect for picnics. There’s a new playground with a celestial theme. Telescopes allow for incredible views of the city. A new adult fitness area caters to a wider range of park users.
Sustainable features such as native drought-tolerant plantings add a touch of nature. Natural irrigation and stormwater retention reflect a modern ecological sensitivity. The upgraded skatepark a testament to the park’s history features a new “Dish” designed by Grindline.
