“A law degree?” you might ask, standing here before Hillside Baptist Church. It’s a curious detail, but it speaks volumes about the man who has led this congregation for over two decades: Reverend Dr. Craig Melvin Smith. Hillside Baptist Church, located in Hillside, Illinois, is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the vision and dedication of a man whose path to ministry took some intriguing turns. Born in Peoria, Illinois, Rev. Smith didn’t initially set his sights on the pulpit. He started his career in banking, then served as a crime analyst for the Peoria Police Department. But a call to preach the Gospel in 1972 changed everything. His first sermon was delivered at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Peoria. This set him on a journey that would ultimately lead him to Hillside. Hillside Baptist Church began its life as the Freedom Baptist Church of the Greater Chicago Area. Over 300 people joined Rev. Smith in founding the church in 2000. Their first services were held in the Hillside Theater. A year later, they purchased the theater and embarked on a major renovation. During the 56-week renovation, the congregation worshipped at Proviso West High School. The newly renovated Hillside Baptist Church opened its doors on Palm Sunday in 2003, representing a $1.6 million investment. Further enhancements totaling half a million dollars have followed. The church has continued to grow and evolve under Rev. Smith’s leadership. In 2019, the “Freedom Forward” project was unveiled. This three-phased plan includes further renovations and a three-story addition for ministry and community use. Beyond his pastoral duties, Rev. Smith has pursued further education. He holds a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Ministry degree. And that law degree? He passed the LSAT in 2013 and hopes to pursue it someday. This constant striving for knowledge reflects the spirit of Hillside Baptist Church. It’s a place where faith and learning go hand in hand, guided by a pastor with a multifaceted background and an unwavering commitment to his congregation.
