Imagine, in 1845, when Florida achieved statehood, Hillsborough County, despite its immense size, housed a mere 836 residents, excluding soldiers and Native Americans. The first commissioners, convening in 1846, grappled with matters of taxation, transportation, and the construction of a new courthouse and jail. The county’s first courthouse, a humble log cabin, met a fiery end during the Second Seminole War. Subsequently, a two-story structure, costing $1,358, replaced it. In 1892, a magnificent red brick courthouse, crowned with a silver dome, graced downtown Tampa. This architectural marvel, designed by J.A.
