Before it became a park this land had a different life. It wasn’t always a haven for relaxation and recreation. Imagine a bustling shopping center. Cars filled parking lots. People hurried in and out of stores. That was the Hillcrest Village shopping center. This wasn’t always the case.
A battle was fought to save this space from becoming yet another apartment complex. Former council member Sandy Greyson led the charge. She fought for years. She believed in preserving green spaces in North Dallas. She knew the community needed a place to gather. A place to connect. A place like Hillcrest Park.
Then came SHOP Cos a Texas developer. They shared a similar vision. They saw the potential for a revitalized space. A space that could blend the old with the new. They purchased the property. They transformed the parking lot into the park you see today.
The transformation wasn’t easy. A two-story office building was demolished. The old parking lot was removed. A playground was built. Native plants were added. Benches and bike racks now dot the landscape. Hillcrest Park is more than just a park. It’s a community hub.
Dallas artists Brad Oldman and Christy Coltrin contributed art. Their whimsical sculpture Stacked Friends stands tall. It’s a symbol of the park’s unique past and bright future. New businesses opened around the park. People started gathering again. Hillcrest Village truly became a village center once more.
