Highway Christian Church a welcoming beacon stands before you. Its history whispers of faith resilience and growth. Originally rooted in the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World movement it emerged from the dedication of Bishop James T Morris. He introduced the Pentecostal doctrine inspiring a small group to gather in the home of Sis Amelia Williams.

In 1935 this dedicated group officially organized under the umbrella of the parent church. Sis Williams became the first pastor. Tragically her death eight months later presented a challenge. Elder Ramsey N Butler stepped forward as assistant pastor then becoming pastor in 1936.

The church thrived. In its first ten years it outgrew four locations. These included Sis Williams’ home 9th Street NW First Street and 301 G Street SW. Growth necessitated building a sanctuary at its current location 4417 Dix St NE. Bishop Butler oversaw this expansion.

The church continued to flourish. In 1980 a new sanctuary was built and the name changed to Greater Morning Star Pentecostal Church. A remarkable achievement was the mortgage liquidation just two years later. Further expansion continued with the 1986 construction of the Ramsey N Butler educational building.

Bishop Butler’s foresight led to a careful selection process for his successor. The congregation voted choosing Elder Charles Johnson now Bishop Johnson. He assumed leadership on April 6 1986. Under his guidance membership grew from approximately 400 to almost 1200.

This remarkable growth spurred plans for yet another expansion. A 60 acre property at 1700 Ritchie Marlboro Road Upper Marlboro Maryland was acquired for a new building. This demonstrates Highway Christian Church’s unwavering commitment to spreading its message. The church continues to be a testament to faith perseverance and the power of community. It stands as a symbol of spiritual growth and unwavering devotion.
