Dare to step back in time. Imagine yourself in the Highlands neighborhood of Denver in 1922. Highlands United Methodist Church is opening its doors. This simplified Gothic Revival building stands proudly at 3131 Osceola Street.

Highlands United Methodist Church has served this community for over 125 years. Our congregation continues to grow. We explore what our community needs today. We carry forward the best of what has been. We respond to the dynamic world around us.

The church’s story began long before this building existed. It reflects a deep commitment to service and community. Arthur S. Wilson designed this beautiful structure. Construction happened in three phases. The first phase completed in 1922. Later phases added features like a pipe organ. A balcony and choir loft were added between 1925 and 1926. Stained glass windows and tower rooms were also included.

Look closely at the blonde brick. Notice the dark iron spots. White Bedford sandstone trims the belt courses. See the sills and buttress caps. The north facade presents a symmetrical face to the world. Crenellated two-story square towers mark each corner. The east tower is slightly larger. Observe the subtle differences in buttressing. Notice the small decorative brick details.

Inside, light filters through the stained-glass windows. These memorial windows line the east and west walls. Each tells a silent story. Names on the lower panels commemorate those who donated them. Smaller arched windows grace the north end of the east elevation. Each holds a single pane of stained glass.

Highlands United Methodist Church became a Denver Landmark in 1998. This designation protects the building and its grounds. It is also part of the Wolff Place Historic District. The historic period extends from 1922 to 1926. This covers the completion of the sanctuary. It includes the installation of those beautiful stained-glass windows.

The church has always been a neighborhood anchor. It offers programs to meet the needs of the community. Highlands United Methodist Church inspires those nearby. Our congregation is committed to preserving its historic integrity. We want to be a role model for the entire neighborhood.
