Founded in 1990 the Center for Visual Art is more than just a gallery. It’s a vibrant hub in Denver’s art scene. This non-profit space is the off-campus gallery of Metropolitan State University of Denver. It showcases contemporary art from local and international artists. The Center for Visual Art isn’t confined to the typical university gallery setting. It actively engages the community. It also fosters student development and sparks important conversations.

Initially the Center for Visual Art’s location wasn’t ideal. In 1990 its area was a rather underdeveloped part of downtown. But a move in 2008 to the heart of Denver’s Art District changed everything. The Center for Visual Art blossomed into a prominent fixture. It’s both a visible part of the university and a standalone force that serves the wider area.

This balance is maintained through thought-provoking exhibitions. The Center for Visual Art also offers community involvement and workforce development opportunities. The gallery’s managing director Cecily Cullen emphasizes its role as a resource and a platform for discussions on global urban issues. The Center for Visual Art isn’t just for art students it’s for everyone.

For students the Center for Visual Art is a valuable training ground. It provides practical experience in various gallery operations. Students get hands-on experience in curation marketing art handling and public interaction. They even host a student art market during the First Friday Art Walk in August. This event features bands beer and food trucks.

The Center for Visual Art also actively collaborates with the local community. MSU Denver’s art education students lead after-school art programs. The gallery partners with organizations like the Colorado Ballet and the Athena Project. Exhibitions like Presence Reflections on the Middle East highlight the gallery’s commitment to timely global issues. The exhibition featured over 60 photography-based pieces by 12 artists.

The Center for Visual Art’s building itself is a point of interest. Originally Harry’s Motors Inc Denver’s oldest continuously operating motorcycle shop occupied it. The building has a long rectangular shape. It has three large storefront windows with decorative brickwork. Four skylights punctuate the flat roof. In 2018 a parklet designed by MSU Denver graduate Mara Maxwell was added. The exterior also features murals by renowned artists like Shepard Fairey and Swoon.

So take a moment to appreciate the Center for Visual Art. It’s a testament to Denver’s dynamic art scene. Its commitment to community engagement and student development makes it a true gem. It’s more than just a gallery. It’s a vital part of the Denver experience. Remember to visit it during opening hours Tuesday to Friday 11 am to 6 pm and Saturday 12 pm to 5 pm. It’s free and open to the public.
