In 1931 Highland Park Village opened. It was the first shopping center of its kind in the United States. This was a pivotal moment for Highland Park. This small town had become a desirable place to live. Highland Park’s story begins much earlier though.

In 1889 a group of Philadelphia investors purchased the land. They envisioned an exclusive area called Philadelphia Place. Henry Exall an agent was in charge. He improved the land. He built gravel roads. He dammed Turtle Creek creating Exall Lake. The Panic of 1893 halted his progress. Exall’s dream was put on hold. The lake however became a popular picnic spot.

John S. Armstrong a former meatpacker bought the land in 1906. He renamed it Highland Park. The name reflected its high elevation overlooking Dallas. He hired renowned landscape architects. Wilbur David Cook known for Beverly Hills and George E. Kessler who designed Fair Park were hired. Twenty percent of the land was set aside for parks a forward-thinking decision.

Highland Park’s residents voted to incorporate in 1913. They resisted annexation by Dallas for decades. A long and hard fought battle ensued. This fight showcases the strong sense of community. Subsequent developments continued to shape the town. The population rose. The town flourished. Strict zoning ordinances in the 1990s ensured the town maintained its character.

Highland Park is more than just beautiful homes and manicured lawns. It has a fascinating history. It played a crucial role in shaping Dallas itself. The town has also contributed to the rich cultural landscape of Texas. Notable residents include governors athletes and actors.
