Reflecting its history, the Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion stands before us. This stadium is more than just concrete and grass. It embodies the spirit of Hungarian football. The Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion proudly carries the name of a true legend. Nándor Hidegkuti was a celebrated MTK Budapest and Hungary footballer. He graced the pitch from 1922 to 2002. This stadium, opened on October 13, 2016, honors his legacy.
Before this modern arena stood an older stadium. It was damaged during World War II. After the war MTK played at rivals’ stadiums. Ferencváros and Újpest hosted them. In 2015, the old stadium faced demolition. This paved the way for the new Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion.
Tamás Deutsch, a prominent figure announced the stadium’s reconstruction. He budgeted between 6 and 6.5 billion HUF. The vision included a facility for approximately 5000 spectators. It would also house the Sándor Károly Football Academy. Demolition started at the end of the 2013–14 season.
The Hungarian state committed 1.39 billion HUF. This was for a sports hall. Another 3.91 billion HUF went to reconstruct the Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion. A further 350 million HUF was allocated for a training pitch.
Bord Építész Stúdió Kft won the tender. Péter Bordás led the design. The UEFA Category 3 stadium can host over 5000 fans. It also features at least 250 VIP seats.
The demolition started by removing floodlights and seats. The main stand was torn down in May 2015. November 16, 2015 saw the laying of the foundation stone. Key figures attended the ceremony. They marked an important step for the club.
The construction saw its share of interesting moments. Displays were once tested using a scene from a film. It starred a Hungarian actress. The final cost exceeded the budget reaching 7.26 billion forints.
October 13, 2016 marked the grand opening. MTK Budapest played Sporting in a friendly match. Viktor Orbán and Tamás Deutsch delivered speeches. The stadium hosted its first Nemzeti Bajnokság I match. MTK Budapest played Gyirmót FC Győr. Sándor Torghelle scored the first goal.
Despite the stadium’s promise, MTK Budapest faced relegation. However, the stadium hosted international matches. Russia played Hungary in the 2017 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. Vasas also used the stadium for a Magyar Kupa match.
Storm Herwart damaged part of the membrane roof. Insurance covered the repairs.
The Hidegkuti Nándor Stadion faced design controversy. Walls were placed beyond each goal. This created space for skyboxes. Some criticized these walls. They called them the “wailing walls”.
The southern goal bears a special name. It honors Márton Fülöp. He was a former MTK Budapest FC goalkeeper. He sadly passed away at a young age.
