Hidden within the vibrant tapestry of Istanbul, the Hidayet Camii whispers tales of transformation. The Hidayet Camii stands before you, a beacon of hope erected on a site once shrouded in darkness. This area, known as Bahçekapı, was once notorious for its illicit activities. Locals even called it “The street that angels abandoned.” Imagine Istanbul in 1812, ravaged by plague. Following this devastation, Sultan Mahmud II ordered the demolition of many districts, including Bahçekapı. He then commissioned the construction of the Hidayet Camii in 1813. The name “Hidayet,” meaning “seeking the right path” in Arabic, reflects the sultan’s intention to transform the area’s reputation. Originally built of wood, the Hidayet Camii underwent a significant reconstruction in 1887 under Sultan Abdul Hamid II. The French architect Alexander Vallaury redesigned the mosque, giving it the distinctive Orientalist style we see today. Look closely at the entrance to the courtyard. You’ll find an inscription detailing this 19th-century renovation. The Hidayet Camii’s two-story design features large pointed-arch windows on the eastern and western sides. The dome is illuminated by 21 windows, bathing the interior in a soft glow. Ascend the stairs to the second floor, where you’ll discover a prayer room and a domed sanctuary. The Hidayet Camii has also undergone renovations in more recent times, in 1983 and again in 2008, ensuring its continued presence in the heart of Istanbul. The mosque’s story reflects the city’s constant evolution, a testament to its resilience and enduring spirit.
