“Escape to Hickinbotham”. That’s their motto. The Hickinbotham Winery stands as a testament to family tradition. It also represents Australian winemaking innovation. For three generations, the Hickinbotham family has shaped the Australian wine industry.
Let’s go back to the early 1920s. “Hick” Hickinbotham started Australia’s first scientific winemaking course at Roseworthy College. His expertise led to the use of the pH meter. This significantly improved Australian winemaking. It helped put Australian wines on the international stage.
Now, fast forward to today. You will find Hickinbotham Winery at 194 Nepean Hwy, Dromana. Here, the tradition continues. Winemaker James Janda believes that wine is made in the vineyard. They grow, make, and bottle their wines onsite. This ensures quality.
But Hickinbotham is not just about wine. It is also about great beer. The Hix Microbrewery started in 2006. Jake Hickinbotham brews award-winning beers here. You can try their Pilsener, Pale Ale, Brown Ale, and Irish Stout. They also offer seasonal and experimental beers.
Feeling hungry? Chef Marcus Levy creates an inspired menu. He uses fresh ingredients. Many come directly from their herb and vegetable gardens. This ensures seasonal dishes are always delicious. Seafood from local sources complements their white wines and lighter beers. Game meats from local and Tasmanian producers pair well with darker wines and ales.
Andrew Hickinbotham planted 22 vineyards on the Mornington Peninsula. He determined that Pinot Noir and Chardonnay best suit the local climate. He has been the head winemaker for the Dromana vineyard since 1990. Now, he shares this role with Jamie.
Terryn Hickinbotham is a friendly face at the cellar door. She knows a lot about wine. Previously, she researched pollen at Melbourne University for 12 years.
Jamie, the resident vigneron, is also the 2011 Queensland Winemaker of the Year. He believes hard work, knowledge, and luck make the best wines. He also served in the navy for five years.
Jake Hickinbotham leads the Hix beer range. He ensures it continues to grow. He is also one half of the Jakcal’s Run name.
Kris Leakey joined the team in 2019. He manages the day-to-day operations. He has worked in venues across the Mornington Peninsula and Hamilton Island.
Hickinbotham is more than a winery and brewery. It embodies a lifestyle. It represents organic practices, rustic charm, love, family, history, and loyalty. The setting includes a 100-year-old handmade brick floor.
Remember ladies, proceed with caution in high heels. There is an open fireplace for cold days. Kids can enjoy the outdoor play area. There’s a cubby house made from an old wine barrel, a vintage cart, and farm machinery.
So, come and experience Hickinbotham Winery. Enjoy the wines, beers, food, and atmosphere. Feel the history and the passion. Taste the dedication and the quality. Hickinbotham welcomes you.
