The salty air whispers secrets of Hickam Harbor. Right here before you lies a place steeped in history a harbor that has witnessed both peace and devastating war. Hickam Harbor isn’t just water it’s a vital part of Hickam Air Force Base a base that has played a crucial role in the history of Hawaii and the United States.

Established in 1935 Hickam Field initially served as Hawaii’s main army airfield. It was here that the might of the US Air Force began to gather strength. Then came December 7 1941 a date etched forever in infamy. The attack on Pearl Harbor targeted not only the battleships but also the airfields. Hickam Field bore the brunt of the assault.

Japanese planes attacked Hickam’s runways and hangars. They focused their fury on the B-17 bombers. Twelve unarmed B-17s arrived during the attack low on fuel. They landed under fire. The attack on Hickam was relentless. Hangars the Hawaiian Air Depot the fire station the chapel and even the guardhouse were hit. The barracks were repeatedly strafed and bombed. A bomb exploded in the mess hall during breakfast killing 35 men. The casualties were staggering 121 men killed 274 wounded and 37 missing. Remarkably the Japanese ignored Hickam’s vital repair facilities and gasoline storage tanks.

Despite this devastation Hickam Field rose from the ashes stronger than before. It played a pivotal role in World War II. It became a major training center for pilots and a critical assembly point for aircraft. Hickam Harbor itself served as a lifeline supporting the flow of troops and supplies. The harbor saw ships bringing essential resources and taking away the wounded. This continued in the Korean and Vietnam wars earning Hickam the nickname America’s Bridge Across the Pacific.

Hickam Harbor’s history doesn’t end with World War II. During the Cold War Hickam’s strategic location remained important. Its continued to support US operations in the Pacific. In 2010 Hickam Air Force Base merged with the Pearl Harbor Naval Base forming Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam. Today Hickam Harbor continues to support this joint base reflecting the enduring strength and resilience of this historical site. The harbor remains a silent witness a tangible link to the past a reminder of the sacrifices made and the enduring spirit of Hickam.
