In 1937, two ambitious Hungarians, Ernő Rubik and Lajos Mitter, yearned for something more. They dreamed of soaring through the skies. Right here, near the HHH vitorlázórepülőtér Plaque, their dreams began to take flight. This plaque commemorates the HHH glider airfield, a place of innovation and passion. The HHH vitorlázórepülőtér, active from 1933 to 1983, played a significant role in Hungarian gliding history. Rubik and Mitter, working in a small, poorly equipped workshop in Esztergom, honed their skills in glider construction and repair. Their collaboration with the Esztergom Flying Society resulted in the creation of two RRG-1 Zöglings gliders in 1932. By 1937, their talent and dedication led them to establish their own venture. They rented the workshop, hired assistants, and completed two remarkable gliders: the Szittya and the Vöcsök. The Vöcsök’s successful test flight at Hármashatárhegy marked a turning point. Its popularity among aero clubs fueled the duo’s ambition. This led to the formal establishment of Aero Ever Kft. in March 1938. The HHH vitorlázórepülőtér became a hub for glider production, fostering a vibrant community of aviation enthusiasts. The company flourished, producing a variety of gliders, including the R-08 Pilis and R-10 Szittya III. They even secured a license to build the DFS-Olympia Meise performance glider for the Horthy Miklós National Aviation Foundation. The HHH vitorlázórepülőtér witnessed the birth and growth of Hungarian gliding. The plaque serves as a reminder of their ingenuity and the spirit of innovation that propelled Hungarian aviation forward.
