“Ever heard of a church that started with just one convert?” That’s essentially the story of the Hetednapi Adventista Egyház imaterme. This house of worship has roots stretching back to the late 19th century. It all began with Anna Nagy, the first known Hungarian convert to the Seventh-day Adventist faith.
J E Huenergardt arrived from America in 1898. His mission was to pioneer the faith in Hungary and the Danube basin. He sought out Anna Nagy in Budapest. Then, in 1901, Michael B Orz, another convert under Huenergardt’s influence, started his work in Budapest. The seeds of the Hetednapi Adventista Egyház imaterme were sown.
A significant milestone occurred in 1902. A general meeting of believers took place. The first official church was established in 1903. Huenergardt himself moved to Budapest to nurture the growing congregation. By 1904, the community had grown significantly. There were 200 Hungarian and German-speaking members. Literature played a crucial role in spreading their message. Huenergardt trained ministers and colporteurs. These individuals distributed religious texts. By 1910, German ministers arrived to provide additional support. This further strengthened the church’s foundation.
In 1911, a small publishing house was established. It operated as a branch of the Hamburg house. This press aided in disseminating information. However, it faced nationalization in 1949. Fortunately, it was restarted in 1989. It continues to contribute to the church’s mission.
World War I brought changes. The Hungarian Conference became part of the European Division. This happened after frontier shifts. Later, in 1928, it joined the Central European Division. Ministers received training in Germany or England.
Today, the Hungarian Union Conference oversees 109 churches. It has approximately 5,009 members. The Hetednapi Adventista Egyház imaterme stands as a testament to the dedication.
