“A church rebuilt in the ‘taste of the time’, they say.” Here we are, standing before the Herzogspitalkirche. It might not appear the most striking church at first, especially compared to some grander examples you might have already seen. This church holds a tale of resilience, a symbol of Munich’s ability to rise from ashes. The original Herzogspitalkirche, a Baroque beauty envisioned by Duke Albert V, was consecrated in 1727. Designed by Johann Baptist Gunetzrhainer, it was a testament to the era’s love for grandeur. But, as we know, World War II left its mark on many beautiful structures, and the Herzogspitalkirche was not spared. The war reduced much of the church to rubble. The once-ornate nave was destroyed, leaving a void in the heart of this sacred space. Yet, from this destruction, a new vision emerged. In the 1950s, architect Alexander von Branca took on the task of rebuilding. Instead of simply recreating the past, von Branca chose to blend the old with the new. The surviving Baroque tower stands tall, a proud reminder of the church’s past. It harmonizes surprisingly well with the new nave, a testament to the architectural trends of the 1950s, with a distinct brickwork interior. This blend of styles makes the Herzogspitalkirche a fascinating study in architectural history. It’s a tangible reminder of destruction and renewal, of Munich’s enduring spirit.
