Gazing upon the Herz-Jesu-Kirche, imagine the bustling Dresden of 1905. This magnificent neo-Gothic structure, a gift from the generous Veronika Fischer, arose from the need for a larger church in the expanding city. The Herz-Jesu-Kirche, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, quickly became a beacon of faith in the Striesen district, bordering Johannstadt. Its architect, August Menken from Berlin, envisioned a grand basilica with six bays, culminating in a single-bay choir with a polygonal end. The main portal, facing Borsbergstraße, features Rochlitz porphyry tuff column shafts, crowned by a gable. Miraculously, the Herz-Jesu-Kirche survived the devastation of World War II largely unscathed. While its original windows were destroyed, they were later replaced with stunning new glass designed by Bruno Seener under a thematic cycle developed by Father Johannes Derksen. These windows depict biblical scenes, including “The Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ” and a breathtaking portrayal of “The Good Shepherd” in the sanctuary. In 2001, these precious windows were further protected with the addition of protective glass. Inside the Herz-Jesu-Kirche, the neo-Gothic stone altar holds a relic of Saint Donata. Look closely at the intricate sculptural ornamentation adorning the portals and capitals within. Notice the motifs of ivy, vine leaves, oak, and chestnut, alongside animal figures like bears, lions, squirrels, birds, and even a snail. Above the two-part main portal, a statue of Christ extends a welcoming embrace. Several original neo-Gothic furnishings remain, including remnants of the high altar (now a side altar), the altar table with tabernacle, the pulpit, the baptismal font, and an ornate wrought-iron grille separating the vestibule and nave. The bells of the Herz-Jesu-Kirche tell a story of resilience. The original bells, cast by the renowned Otto bell foundry in Bremen shortly after the church’s consecration, were lost to the demands of World War I. Replacements, also crafted by Otto, met a similar fate during World War II. The current bells, installed in 1990, include a large bell originally intended for the Französischer Dom in Berlin, inscribed with “Hope 1989.” The “Three Kings Bell” bears a quote from Cardinal Meisner, while the “Mater Dolorosa Bell” features a Pietà and a comforting verse from Luke. The smallest bell, miraculously spared from the war’s destruction, dates back to 1929. Listen closely for the full peal on special Catholic high holidays. The romantic organ, another gift from Veronika Fischer, was built by the Jehmlich brothers in 1909 and beautifully restored in 1990. The Herz-Jesu-Kirche has witnessed history unfold, from its early years under Father Wilhelm Rudolph to the post-war rebuilding efforts led by Father Johannes Derksen. It served as a refuge for the Erlӧser-Andreas congregation after their church was destroyed and played a role in the 2005 World Youth Day. Even today, the Herz-Jesu-Kirche remains a vibrant center of community life, its doors open to all who seek solace and inspiration within its sacred walls.
