Opened in 1998, Hertsmere Jewish Primary School started humbly. It began with just one class at the Borehamwood and Elstree Synagogue. A year later, the school moved to its current location on Watling Street in Radlett. Hertsmere Jewish Primary School officially became the “Joy and Stanley Cohen Hertsmere Jewish Primary School”. This name honored the couple’s generosity in helping establish the school. Two reception classes and a Year 1 class marked the beginning of this journey. In January 2000, Hertsmere Jewish Primary School welcomed its first nursery pupils. A truly grand occasion came when the late Prince Philip himself inaugurated the school. He unveiled a plaque in the main hall. This moment was the culmination of dedicated work by the steering committee. They transformed the building on Watling Street. It became Hertfordshire’s first state-funded Jewish primary school. Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks praised the school, calling it a “magnificent achievement”. Hertsmere Jewish Primary School steadily grew. By 2006, it had reached its full capacity. Under the leadership of its first Headteacher, Mrs. Bazak, Hertsmere Jewish Primary School gained a reputation for excellence. In 2010, Mr. Isaacs took the helm as the second Headteacher. Mrs. Rita Alak-Levi joined as Deputy Head in 2017. She became Headteacher in 2019. A 2023 review by the Local Authority highlighted the school’s calm and caring environment. It also emphasized the school’s strong focus on teaching and learning. Hertsmere Jewish Primary School joined the Jewish Community Academy Trust. In March 2024, Ofsted inspectors gave the school a “Good” rating across all categories. They noted the “happy and inclusive culture” and the “vibrant buzz and community spirit”. Today, Hertsmere Jewish Primary School educates over 400 pupils between the ages of 3 and 11. It continues to thrive as a vital part of the community.
