Ever wonder about the lives of those who walked here centuries ago? Right here stands the Herrenhaus Graßdorf a testament to time. Graßdorf itself is a part of Taucha. It sits northeast of Leipzig. This places it between Leipzig and Eilenburg.

The Rittergut Graßdorf has a rich history. It started as a Rittersitz in 1445 or 1447. By 1501 it was known as a Sattelhof. It officially became a Rittergut in 1551. The von Leutzsch family owned it in the 15th and 16th centuries. In 1575, the Leipziger Rat bought it. Christian von Döring was the owner from 1653 to 1681. From 1718, the Rat zu Leipzig owned it. The city of Leipzig became the owner in 1901. After 1945 it became a Volkseigenes Gut. In 1990, the city of Leipzig regained ownership. They remained owners until 2003.

The Rittergut Graßdorf complex is large and almost square. The Herrenhaus is separate but integrated into the buildings. It was expanded after 1990. The Herrenhaus has two stories. The farm buildings have one or two stories. The facades are plastered. The roofs are gabled or hipped. Some are half-hipped.

The Rittergut Graßdorf that you see today largely dates to the 19th and 20th centuries. Construction finished around 1910. It was built in the historicism style. The coat of arms on the Herrenhaus indicates that the city of Leipzig was once the owner.

A landscape park once graced the Rittergut Graßdorf. Today it is no longer recognizable as a park. The Rittergut Graßdorf has been renovated. The buildings are used for housing, agriculture and business. The grounds are partially open to the public. However, the Herrenhaus itself is not open for tours.

Fun fact the Grüne Ring Leipzig and the Parthe-Mulde-Radroute pass through Graßdorf. August Schumann mentioned Graßdorf in his 1816 dictionary of Saxony. From 1856, Graßdorf belonged to the Gerichtsamt Taucha. In 1875, it became part of the Amtshauptmannschaft Leipzig. Graßdorf was incorporated into Taucha in 1934.

Take a moment to appreciate the Herrenhaus Graßdorf. Think about its past owners. Consider its role in the region’s history. Though you cannot enter, imagine the stories held within its walls.
