A haven for dogs and birdwatchers alike Heron Park awaits. This isn’t just any park. It’s a slice of Auckland history. Originally part of a sheep farm Heron Park’s land changed hands many times. The Gittos family once owned it. They were tanners. Their tannery caused water pollution issues. They eventually moved. The land was later bought and sold by various individuals. Walter Frederick Mason a clerk owned much of it. John Potter a blacksmith and Avondale Road Board chairman also owned a portion. A planned railway line and even a container port nearly changed its destiny. Fortunately these plans failed. The land became Heron Park in 1988-1989. It’s now a haven for dogs a place where they can freely run. Bird watchers can spot white-faced herons the park’s namesake shining cuckoos and banded dotterels. Children love the playground with its flying fox. Adults appreciate the paved path offering stunning Waitakere Ranges views. Heron Park is more than just green space. It’s a testament to Auckland’s evolution. A quiet space close to the coast. A place where even motorway noise is muted. It’s a reminder that even near a bustling city peace and nature can thrive. A place rich in history. A place for everyone. Enjoy your visit to Heron Park.
