How did a farm in Rowlett become a landmark? The Herfurth House Plaque marks a story of German immigration and agricultural innovation.

Let’s explore the history behind this house. It reflects the lives of the Herfurth family. They significantly contributed to the region.

In the late 19th century many German and Swiss families sought farmland. The agricultural boom attracted them to northeastern Dallas County. Among these families were Johann Christian Herfurth and his wife Anna Barbara Etter.

Their son John Samuel Herfurth found the land. The family purchased a 151-acre farm in 1908. It had a small three-room house.

Around 1910 the Herfurths added two rooms and a hallway. A larger addition in 1918 created the airplane bungalow style we see today. The house shows classic craftsman details. Its design features strong horizontal lines. It also has a low-pitched roof and small panes in the upper windows. Evidence suggests the contractor used Sears Roebuck & Co. plans.

John Samuel Herfurth embraced modern farming methods. He worked with Dallas County extension agents. Together they implemented contour plowing and crop rotation. In the 1930s these techniques were groundbreaking. Herfurth became known as a local farm conservationist. He even received the honor of triple-A farmer.

Besides cotton production Herfurth bred horses and mules. Animal husbandry was another passion. His youngest son Carl Leroy Herfurth and his wife Helen Hall were the last family members to live here.

The Herfurth House Plaque is a Texas Historic Landmark since 2013. It stands as a tribute to the family’s legacy. It reminds us of their contributions to agriculture and community. Garland ISD honored Mr. Herfurth by naming Herfurth Elementary after him in Rowlett.
