The airport has been modernized over the years. However it still gets overloaded in summer. Its single terminal struggles with peak traffic. To address this a new airport named Kasteli is under construction. It is scheduled to open in 2025. Kasteli will replace Heraklion International Airport as central Crete’s main air hub.
