Heraklion International Airport Nikos Kazantzakis is also Greece’s second busiest airport. Only Athens International sees more traffic. During summer this airport bustles with charter flights from all over Europe. The rest of the year it handles flights from Athens and other Greek cities.

Let’s step back in time. The airport was built in 1937. The first plane touched down two years later. World War II brought operations to a halt from 1941 to 1946. Reopening meant starting from scratch. The airport administration operated from three tents. One tent served as an office. Another cared for passengers.

In 1947 a small passenger hall was constructed. The first runway followed in 1948. Planes began flying to European destinations. A larger terminal hall became necessary by 1971. The old one simply couldn’t handle the traffic.

Today Heraklion International Airport Nikos Kazantzakis has a single terminal building. There are two runways and ample parking for large aircraft. Passengers enjoy check-in stations shops and restaurants. You can also find luggage storage money exchange offices and car rentals.

The airport has been modernized over the years. However it still gets overloaded in summer. Its single terminal struggles with peak traffic. To address this a new airport named Kasteli is under construction. It is scheduled to open in 2025. Kasteli will replace Heraklion International Airport as central Crete’s main air hub.

Heraklion International Airport Nikos Kazantzakis offers various facilities. These include two premium lounges ATMs and currency exchange counters. There is also baggage wrapping a luggage storage service a First Aid Station and a Baby Care Center.

Need a snack or some last-minute shopping? The terminal hosts a restaurant four EVEREST canteens and a FLOCAFE canteen. You will also find an AIR ROLOI ice cream shop duty-free shops a cosmetic shop and a gift shop.

Getting to and from Heraklion International Airport Nikos Kazantzakis is easy. City buses connect the airport with Heraklion. Taxis are readily available. Private transfers offer a more direct route. Several car rental companies operate at the airport. Booking in advance is recommended for the best rates.

Heraklion International Airport Nikos Kazantzakis operates 24 hours a day. The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority manages the airport. In 2022 the airport served over 8 million passengers. Most international passengers came from the United Kingdom Germany France Italy and Spain.
