In 1971, a chapter of Seattle’s architectural history closed as the Richardsonian Romanesque Burke Building met its demise. Rising from its ashes, quite literally, on the block bordered by Marion and Madison Streets and First and Second Avenues, came the Henry M. Jackson Federal Building. This 37-story steel and concrete giant, designed by Bassetti/Norton/Metler/Rekevics and John Graham & Associates, would soon dominate the Seattle skyline. Completed in 1974, the Henry M. Jackson Federal Building quickly earned recognition, receiving the Honor Award of the American Institute of Architects just two years later. But the building’s story is more than steel and accolades. It’s a story of compromise, of honoring the past while embracing the future. The architects, mindful of the Burke Building’s legacy, incorporated fragments of the old structure into the new design. Look closely, and you’ll find the Romanesque entry arch, a ghostly reminder of what once stood here, now gracing the landscaped plaza on Second Avenue. The Henry M. Jackson Federal Building isn’t just a government office; it’s a living timeline. The building’s plaza, designed by landscape architect Richard Haag, is a multi-level marvel, echoing the Spanish Steps of Rome, and bridging the 45-foot incline between First and Second Avenues. It’s a space designed for contemplation and interaction, where Isamu Noguchi’s “Landscape of Time” sculpture invites passersby to pause and reflect. The Henry M. Jackson Federal Building isn’t just a building; it’s a microcosm of Seattle itself. Inside, the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Thirteenth U.S. Coast Guard District all find a home. It once even hosted an unexpected visitor: a juvenile coyote, briefly trapped in an elevator in 1997. The Henry M. Jackson Federal Building’s story, much like the city it calls home, is one of constant evolution. In 2006, a $36 million renovation included seismic strengthening and modernization, preparing this architectural icon for the future while honoring its vibrant past. The Henry M. Jackson Federal Building stands as a testament to Senator Jackson’s own legacy. A champion of environmental protection and the expansion of national parks, Jackson’s name graces a building that seeks to balance progress with preservation, much like the senator himself.
