Have you ever felt the Yangtze’s breath on your skin? Here on Hengsha Island you can. This seemingly ordinary island at the mouth of the mighty Yangtze River holds a secret history. It’s a story of emergence migration and transformation.

Hengsha Island didn’t always exist. Born from the Yangtze in 1858 it slowly expanded. Imagine the muddy waters gradually coalescing into land. Farmers began reclaiming this new earth in 1886. They tilled the soil creating rice paddies and cotton fields. This was a time of hard work and ingenuity. People wrestled with the river shaping it to their needs.

The island itself was mobile. Between its creation and 1958 Hengsha migrated about 5.25 kilometers. It shifted northwest while receding to the southeast. Imagine the island literally moving across the landscape. This wandering ended with the construction of a seawall. The island finally found its place.

In 1958 Hengsha Island joined Baoshan County. Its ferries connected it to the mainland. Soon a wave of new inhabitants arrived. Many were boat people organized into fishing brigades. Later sent-down youth from Shanghai found themselves here too. They contributed to the island’s development through reclamation urban defense and propaganda.

Hengsha Island’s journey wasn’t just about land reclamation. It involved the lives and dreams of people. In 1992 Beijing designated it a national tourist resort. While a proposed casino was later cancelled plans for an international conference center and a forest park took its place. The aim was to preserve at least 70% of Hengsha Island as a lush forest park.

Today Hengsha is part of Chongming District. Its orchards produce most of Shanghai’s citrus fruits. Fishing remains important. The island is also known for its tranquil atmosphere. A commercial cemetery is here as well as areas for sea burials. The island is a mix of past and present of quiet contemplation and lively development. It is a testament to the resilience of nature and the enduring spirit of people who have shaped it over time. A hidden gem on the edge of the Yangtze this place truly deserves your attention.
