“Hean1 Leng3 Tnua2.” That is how the locals call Heng Len Tuah in Penang Hokkien. This temple stands as a testament to faith and community. It is located on Noordin Street Ghaut in George Town. Specifically it is on the eastern part of the Seven Street Precinct.

Once, Heng Len Tuah began as a humble shrine. Over time the community grew. It needed a larger space for worship and gathering.

Between 2013 and 2015, a new brick temple was constructed. This replaced the original shrine. The new Heng Len Tuah stands proudly next to the Noordin Street Flats. The present temple is an enlargement of the smaller shrine that was once here.

Inside Heng Len Tuah, you will find a single prayer hall. This hall serves as the heart of the temple. Murals adorn either side of the hall. They depict scenes from Chinese folklore and local stories.

The front altar table is a focal point. Devotees offer their prayers and respects here. The altar alcove houses various deities. These include Tua Li Ya Pek.

While Heng Len Tuah was being rebuilt, the deities resided in a temporary shrine. This ensured continuous worship during the construction period. Even during construction the community’s faith never wavered.

Finding Heng Len Tuah is quite easy. It is near the junction of Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway and Noordin Street Ghaut. From the Weld Quay Ferry and Bus Terminal, walk south. Continue on Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway. Look for the Noordin Street Flat on your right. The temple is right behind these flats.

Heng Len Tuah is more than just a building. It is a spiritual anchor for many. In 1973 Heng Len Tuah was established. The main seat is Zhongtan Yuanshuai. Heng Len Tuah also worships many deities. Xuanwu the Great Emperor. Qingshui Ancestor. Great Sage Equal to Heaven. Guangze Zunwang. Emperor Guan. Wood God. Gold God. Earth Lord. Lord Tiger. Da Er Ye Bo.
