Deep in the heart of Northwest London, Hendon whispers tales of ancient origins and modern transformations. Hendon, whose name itself means “high place” or “down,” holds a rich history dating back to the Domesday Book of 1087. The motto “Endeavour” perfectly encapsulates Hendon’s journey through time. From a rural parish in Middlesex to a bustling urban area within Greater London, Hendon has continually evolved. The arrival of the Midland Railway in 1868 marked a turning point. It connected Hendon to the heart of London and sparked rapid suburban development. This led to a social divide between the more affluent uphill areas and the working-class communities near the railway station. Brent Street blossomed as a commercial hub in the 1890s. Hendon’s industry, initially centered on manufacturing, including motor and aviation works, boomed from the 1880s onwards. The expansion continued, and in 1931, Hendon absorbed the neighboring parish of Edgware. This enlarged Hendon significantly, stretching from Edgware and Mill Hill down to Golders Green. Hendon’s urban district status in 1894 transitioned to a municipal borough in 1932. This lasted until 1965, when it became part of the London Borough of Barnet. Nestled within Hendon, Church End holds intriguing secrets. The St Mary’s Church, with its oldest fabric dating back to the 13th century, stands as a testament to Hendon’s enduring spirit. The enigma of its dedication to St Mary, despite the weathercock bearing the badge of St John, adds to its mystique. Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore, rests in its churchyard. Another notable figure buried here is Herbert Chapman, the legendary football manager. Nearby, the Greyhound pub, originally the Church House, hosted vestry meetings from the 1600s to 1878. The oldest building in Hendon, a 17th-century farmhouse that housed the Church Farmhouse Museum, sits adjacent to the pub. Further west, Hendon Central, once open fields, transformed into a bustling junction with the arrival of the Underground in 1923. It quickly became a vital shopping center, dubbed the “Piccadilly Circus of North West London” by London Electric Railways. Hendon also boasts impressive green spaces. Hendon Park and Sunny Hill Park provide tranquil escapes from the urban bustle. The River Brent winds through Hendon, a reminder of nature’s presence amidst the city’s sprawl. Today, Hendon continues to thrive. It is home to the renowned Middlesex University and the rugby union club Saracens F.C. at Copthall Stadium. Hendon’s story is one of constant transformation. It is a tapestry woven with threads of ancient history, industrial growth, and suburban expansion. From its humble beginnings as a rural parish to its vibrant present, Hendon remains a captivating destination. Its blend of history, culture, and community creates a unique urban experience in the heart of London.
