Did you know that the Hendon Reform Synagogue’s story begins not in a single building but in the hearts of a community? We stand before the current magnificent structure a testament to their enduring faith and resilience. The Hendon Reform Synagogue as we know it today is a product of a merger. It joined forces with the Edgware and District Reform Synagogue in 2017. This merger created the largest synagogue in Europe a truly remarkable feat.
Before this union however each synagogue had its own unique history. The Hendon Reform Synagogue’s journey began in 1949. Its members initially gathered in private homes. This intimate setting underscores their initial commitment and dedication. Later they moved to a Methodist Meeting Hall. As the congregation grew they purchased a disused tennis club in 1950. This humble beginning was transformed into their first synagogue building completed in 1955. This first building is now known as the Kingsley Fisher Hall. It’s named after the founders Sidney Kingsley and Ben Fisher.
The original building quickly proved too small. The congregation launched another fundraising campaign. They built an annex in 1965. This expansion included stunning stained-glass windows. Many congregants donated to these windows in memory of loved ones. These windows depict Judaica and biblical scenes. They are surrounded by marble walls creating a warm serene atmosphere. The dedication ceremony in 1968 drew 500 people. It marked a pivotal moment for the growing community.
The Edgware and District Reform Synagogue also has a rich history. It started in 1934 as the Edgware and District Progressive Jewish Fellowship. It became the Edgware and District Reform Synagogue in 1935. In its early days it received invaluable support from the West London Synagogue. This support helped them establish themselves as an independent congregation. Over the years both synagogues grew closer. They shared services and resources culminating in the historic 2017 merger. This merger formed the Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue. It brought together two vibrant communities under one roof. Their shared history and commitment to Reform Judaism created this impressive legacy.
The Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue continues to thrive. It provides a place of worship learning and community. It serves as a center for people of all ages and backgrounds. It maintains a strong connection to its past. It also looks forward to a future filled with faith fellowship and growth. It’s a remarkable story of perseverance and unity. This is a story embodied in the very stones of this building. So take a moment to appreciate this incredible place of worship. A place where history faith and community intertwine.
