Established in 1873 Hendon Preparatory School stands proudly on Tenterden Grove. It’s a haven for young learners aged two to ten. A small independent school Hendon Prep boasts a warm family atmosphere. Children here thrive in small classes. The school achieves outstanding results. Hendon Prep’s history is rich and fascinating. It wasn’t always a preparatory school. The County School Hendon opened in 1914. This was just a month after the First World War began. The school grew rapidly. By 1932 a new extension housed 480 pupils. A memorable oak tree stood proudly in front of the gymnasium. Planted by Olympic medalist Harold Whitlock this tree was sadly felled in 2007.
The school continued to expand. A significant addition in 1961 included a new assembly hall and dining facilities. However the 1970s brought change. Hendon County Grammar School merged with St David’s County Secondary School for Boys. This created Hendon Senior High School and Hendon Junior High School. In 1978 the whole school finally integrated under the name Hendon School. The school faced closure threats in the 1980s. It survived and thrived. Today Hendon Preparatory School continues its legacy. It provides a first-class education for many. It remains a vibrant part of the Hendon community. This small school with a big heart has a bright future. The school’s motto Omnia discendo vinces “by learning you will conquer everything” remains relevant today. Hendon Prep empowers its pupils to conquer the world.
