Once known as Ōpanuku, Henderson Valley whispers tales of ancient Māori heritage. This locality in West Auckland invites you to discover its rich past.

Henderson Valley lies within the traditional rohe of Te Kawerau ā Maki. Ōpanuku was its original name. It refers to Panuku. She was the wife of Parekura. Nihotupu kidnapped her.

Te Kawerau ā Maki had a settlement near the Ōpanuku Stream. It was known as Ōpareira. Pareira was the niece of Toi-te-huatahi. She lived at Te Wai-o-Pareira or Henderson Creek. Pareira seasonally harvested the forest.

The Ōpanuku Stream flows down Henderson Valley. It was dammed for kauri logging in the 1850s. Pākehā settled the valley by the 1880s. Henderson Valley Road provided access.

In the 1920s, Ferndale was a popular picnic and swimming area. It is now known as the Henderson Valley Scenic Reserve or Carey Park. The Brown Owl Tea Rooms was located here.

Henderson Valley covers 15.04 square kilometers. As of June 2024, its population was estimated at 1440. That is a population density of 96 people per square kilometer.

In the 2023 New Zealand census, Henderson Valley had a population of 1422. This was a decrease of 18 people since 2018. However, it was an increase of 69 people since 2013.

The median age in Henderson Valley is 42.5 years. This is older than the national median of 38.1 years.

Henderson Valley School opened in 1915. It is a coeducational primary school. As of November 2024, it had 352 students.
