Established in 1953 Henderson High School stands proudly on Henderson Valley Road. It wasn’t the first high school in West Auckland. Students previously travelled to Avondale College or other central Auckland schools. Thomas Henderson a local businessman lent his name to this new institution.
The school opened its doors on April 1 1953. One hundred and fifty third-formers and forty other pupils were enrolled. Nine staff including principal A D W Woolcott guided them. The Minister of Education officially opened the school. He noted the school’s secular and free nature. Yet a real spiritual note permeated the atmosphere.
Henderson High rapidly gained recognition. By 1963 it was a force to be reckoned with in sports and academics. The school’s early years saw the introduction of evening classes for the community. These included English language courses for new immigrants. Interestingly New Zealand’s compulsory military training influenced the school. Boys began cadet training. Girls participated in a variety of clubs. These covered arts crafts and Maori history.
The school’s musical achievements are equally impressive. The school band initially supported the cadet unit. In 1964 with the end of compulsory military training the band evolved. It transitioned into an instrumental group and later a chamber music group. Annual music competitions flourished. A mixed choir was formed by 1960. School concerts began in 1957. The 1958 show was a spectacle. It featured plays songs gymnastics ballet and skillful guitar accompaniment. Peter Posa a student at the time later became an internationally acclaimed guitarist.
Henderson High School’s facilities have expanded over the decades. The school was initially built using a common design plan. This sped up secondary school construction after World War II. The “Henderson type school” a single-storey all-timber design was later replaced. The school’s library initially an empty room evolved into a free-standing building in 1971. A new school hall opened in 1960 after a week of celebrations. A swimming pool was added in 1963. The school continued to expand. A new gymnasium opened in 1978. A marae dedicated to multicultural teaching was established in 1985. The Parekura Centre supporting students with special education needs was refurbished in 2006. A new hockey pitch was completed in 2011. A hockey pavilion followed in 2022. New shelters designed by architecture students were built in 2016.
The 50th jubilee in 2003 was a momentous occasion. Many notable alumni including All Blacks Michael Jones Mark Mayerhofler and Eroni Clarke attended. This highlights the enduring impact of Henderson High School on its students and the community. The school’s rich history and ongoing commitment to excellence continue to shape the lives of students. The legacy of Henderson High School is one of progress and achievement. It serves as a beacon of education and community spirit in West Auckland.
