A hushed reverence seems to emanate from the very stones of Helligtrekongers Kirke. This isn’t just a building. It’s a story etched in brick and glass. Helligtrekongers Kirke stands in Vallensbæk Landsby. It was built between 2011 and 2012. This modern church faces Vallensbæk Kirke directly.
Let’s step back to 2006. Vallensbæk Parish held an architectural competition. They needed a new church called Helligtrekongers Kirke. The old church was too small. Erik Møller’s Architectural Office, now ERIK architects, won. Peder Elgaard led the project.
Notice the two distinct cylindrical shapes. The inner cylinder holds the main church space. It’s made of whitewashed brick. The outer cylinder is larger and lower. It’s crafted from steel and glass. This space holds the entrance hall and vestry.
Walk along the glass facade. A corridor runs the length of it. This also acts as a side aisle around the open church space. Light filters through perforated plexiglass panels. These panels absorb sound and reflect light. This creates a unique atmosphere.
Consider the materials used inside Helligtrekongers Kirke. They chose durable materials. These include brick, granite, and solid oak. Everything was custom-designed for the church.
Pause for a moment near the entrance. To the left is the entrance to the church room. The stairs lead to the gallery and sacristy. Next to the weapon house there is a room where children can be entertained. They can follow the events inside the church room through a discreet little window.
Look closely at the biblical quotes adorning the church. Søren Ulrik Thomsen selected them. Carl H. K. Zakrisson and Allan Daastrup created the special design. Even the font is unique. It was designed specifically for Helligtrekongers Kirke by Carl. H. K. Zakrisson and Allan Daastrup.
Helligtrekongers Kirke isn’t alone. A parish hall stands nearby. Together with the old church, they form a “church center.” This evokes early Christian church complexes. From Vallensbæk Torvevej, you might not even notice the new Helligtrekongers Kirke. It blends so well with its surroundings. The goal was to relieve the old Vallensbæk Church from the 1100s due to lack of space.
As you leave Helligtrekongers Kirke, remember its purpose. It’s more than bricks and mortar. It is a place for community. It is a testament to modern design complementing ancient faith. It’s a space where light and sound dance together. It’s a place where everyone is welcome.
