Helle Gotveds Plads is located where Den Grønne Sti crosses Rolighedsvej. This is no accident. Gotved dedicated her life to the physical well-being of Danes. This location is fitting.
In 2021, Frederiksberg Municipality honored eight female pioneers. Helle Gotved was among them. The municipality named this small square after her.
Helle Gotved was born in 1912. She was a gymnastics teacher. She ran her own gymnastics institute on Vodroffsvej.
Her father Niels Hansen Rasmussen built the Gymnastikhuset in 1898. The inscription above the entrance read: “Ret ryggen og tal Sandhed” meaning “Straighten your back and speak the truth.” Helle was born in this house. She later gave birth to her five children there. She died there too at the age of 94.
Gotved developed her unique method called Gotvedgymnastik. This system aimed to make Danes more aware of their bodies. It sought to restore the joy of movement. She believed in a holistic approach to exercise. In her first book, she wrote that the soul and body are two sides of the same coin.
Her work reached a wide audience through books and radio programs. Evening schools across the country taught her gymnastics approach. She became a well-known figure.
Frederiksberg was central to Helle Gotved’s life. It was where she started her work. It was where she lived her entire life. Now, a piece of the city bears her name.
The Gymnastikhuset was central to Gotved’s life. In 2007, the Gotved Institute bought the Gymnastikhuset from Helle Gotved’s children. The building has been renovated and is still used for gymnastics classes.
Helle Gotveds Plads is more than just a location. It is a reminder of a woman. She championed physical and mental well-being.
During the inauguration of Helle Gotveds Plads, there were speeches and songs. Anne Marie Helger sang “Øvesangen” and “Indvielsessangen.” Søren Ekman encouraged people to rest at the square. He wanted them to reflect and connect with their bodies.
You can find benches here. Take a break. Maybe stretch. Swing your arms. Remember Helle Gotved’s message. Helle Gotveds Plads invites everyone to embrace movement. It encourages people to find joy in their bodies.
