What if horses could burst from water? Right here at Piccadilly Circus stands The Horses of Helios. This bronze sculpture captures the power of Greek mythology. Helios was the Greek god of the sun. His four horses pulled his chariot across the sky each day.

The Horses of Helios depicts these magnificent steeds. They are Aethon, Eous, Phlegon, and Pyrois. Each name carries a fiery meaning. Aethon means “Blazing”. Eous means “He of the Dawn”. Phlegon means “Burning”. Pyrois means “The Fiery One”. These horses embody the sun’s strength and vitality.

Rudy Weller created this stunning sculpture. It was installed in 1992 during the Criterion Theatre’s refurbishment. The Horses of Helios comprises three bronze elements with dark patina. There is one pair of horses weighing approximately 4 tons and two single horses. The rearing horses appear to be bursting from the fountain’s water.

But that’s not the only artwork here. Look up to the building above. Six stories high, you’ll see The Daughters of Helios. Also known as the Three Graces. These gold-leaf-covered aluminum figures appear to leap from the building. They represent Aglaea, Euphrosyne, and Thalia. Some say they are the daughters of Helios and the naiad Aegle.

Criterion Capital recently completed a year-long restoration of The Horses of Helios. This ambitious project shows a commitment to preserving cultural heritage. The restoration included a full overhaul of the fountain’s infrastructure. It also brought the bronze sculptures back to their original grandeur. This project enhances the public realm in the heart of London.

The restoration involved many steps. Defective electrical wiring was replaced. A new control panel and main jet pump were installed. The team installed a state-of-the-art filtration system. This includes UV and chemical treatment to meet modern standards. Jayne Meadows of Bronze Sculpture Surgery led the detailed bronze repair.

The Horses of Helios has become an iconic part of London’s West End. It attracts locals and tourists alike. The dynamic figures and powerful imagery are truly breathtaking. The sculpture encapsulates movement and evokes a sense of power and elegance. It’s a perfect spot for that postcard-perfect photo.

The restoration ensures The Horses of Helios remains a cherished feature for generations. It enhances the vibrancy of the West End. This area attracts some of the highest footfall in Europe. The project reflects a broader mission to activate the public realm. It contributes to the cultural and social fabric of London.

So next time you’re in Piccadilly Circus, take a moment. Admire The Horses of Helios and the Daughters of Helios above. Think about the Greek god of the sun. Imagine his chariot pulled by these powerful steeds across the sky. It’s a reminder of the beauty and power of mythology in the heart of London.
