Have you ever wondered what it would be like to stand in the shadow of history? Here, at the Pasing Cemetery in Munich, you can do just that. Right in front of you lies the final resting place of Heinrich and Hans Osel, a father and son whose lives were intertwined with the tumultuous events of Germany’s 20th century.

Heinrich Osel wasn’t just any man; he was a Bavarian politician and a leading figure in the Zentrum party. His dedication to his constituents and his unwavering belief in a united Germany earned him a seat in the Reichstag, the German Parliament. However, his career was tragically cut short in 1919. During the chaotic aftermath of World War I, Heinrich Osel was caught in the crossfire of a political assassination attempt. He was an innocent victim, shot and killed in the Bavarian Landtag, the state parliament.

His son, Hans Osel, was just a young boy when his father was tragically taken. The loss of his father, and the turbulent years that followed, impacted his life deeply. Instead of pursuing the academic path that was planned for him, he turned to art, finding solace in the world of sculpture. Hans Osel became a renowned sculptor, leaving behind a legacy of impressive works, many of which still grace the streets of Munich. He continued to create art until his death in 1996, and he, too, found his final resting place here, beside his father.

The inscription on the grave reads: “UND LIEBE BLEIBT / TROTZ BLUT UND TOD / UND WAFFEN / DER GRUND DER WELT /…”. It’s a poignant reminder of the enduring power of love and the profound impact that events and individuals have on history. As you stand before the simple tombstone, imagine the life that unfolded here, the whispers of history carried on the wind. This humble grave tells a powerful story, one that speaks to the fragility of life, the enduring power of love, and the enduring legacy of art.
