Pause for a moment to appreciate this understated yet significant monument. This is the Heinrich-Heine-Denkmal. It is one of Leipzig’s first memorials erected after World War II. The Heinrich-Heine-Denkmal stands as a testament to the enduring power of art and the importance of remembering those who fought for freedom of expression.

The Heinrich-Heine-Denkmal honors the celebrated German poet Heinrich Heine. Heine was born on December 13, 1797. The memorial was inaugurated on his 150th birthday in 1947. It is located in the garden behind the Volkshaus on Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse.

This location has a story. Young workers attending educational courses at the Volkshaus first conceived the idea for a Heine memorial in the 1920s. Erich Schilling revived this idea. Schilling was a Buchenwald concentration camp survivor. After the war, he oversaw the Volkshaus reconstruction as a trade union official.

Schilling initiated the Heinrich-Heine-Denkmal’s construction. He financed it with private funds. Wilhelm Andreas, a Leipzig sculptor, and Walter Beyer, an architect, designed it. Arno Scheunert handled the stonework.

The Heinrich-Heine-Denkmal’s creation wasn’t without challenges. Schilling soon clashed with the communist authorities. He opposed the forced merger of the SPD. He belonged to the SPD with the KPD. Schilling fled to West Berlin after the 1953 uprising.

His Heinrich-Heine-Denkmal suffered as a result. It was neglected. It stood in a kindergarten built behind the Volkshaus. It was even boarded up at times. The Heinrich-Heine-Denkmal was absent from the DDR’s list of protected monuments. Fortunately, the stone has been under monument protection since 1996.

The Heinrich-Heine-Denkmal itself is simple yet powerful. It is a two-meter-high stele made of reddish granite. The stele has a rectangular cross-section. The front is polished. It bears the inscription HEINRICH HEINE at the top. The year 1947 is at the bottom. The top of the stele is slightly stepped. It rests on a concrete base about one square meter in size. Intriguingly, the granite comes from the base of the Victory Monument. The Victory Monument stood in the market. It was dismantled in 1946.

Consider the Heinrich-Heine-Denkmal’s journey. It went from a dream of young workers to a reality. It faced neglect and political obstacles. It now stands as a protected monument. It reminds us of Heine’s legacy. It embodies the resilience of art and ideas.
