“Amazing, isn’t it, how a simple promise could lead to something so enduring?” At the beginning of the Illschlucht, near the “hohe bruck”, you find the Heilig Kreuz Kapelle. This chapel holds a history more intriguing than its modest exterior might suggest. It all began in 1372 with Rudolf V, the last Count of Montfort-Feldkirch. Upon his safe return from a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, he made good on a promise. He built the Heilig Kreuz Kapelle around 1380 as a testament to his gratitude. Originally, the chapel served as a branch of the church in Dorf and belonged to the parish of Tisis. It was owned by the former Feldkirch Knights Hospitaller Commandery and its legal successors Weingarten and Ottobeuren. However, with secularization in 1802-1803, the chapel became the property of the Austrian state. It was declared property of the imperial and royal domain fund in 1869 and remains so to this day. While the chapel might seem small, it holds centuries of stories within its walls. It stands as a testament to faith, history and the enduring power of a promise kept.
