Ever wondered about the legacy of a dairy farm? Welcome to the Heide Museum of Modern Art. This isn’t just any museum. It’s a story woven into the very fabric of Melbourne’s artistic soul. Heide started life as a humble dairy farm. John and Sunday Reed bought it in 1934. They were passionate art collectors. They transformed this simple farm into a vibrant hub for creativity.
Heide became the epicenter of a revolutionary art movement. The Heide Circle flourished here. Imagine Sidney Nolan painting his iconic Ned Kelly series in the farmhouse’s dining room. He lived at Heide for almost a decade. Albert Tucker Joy Hester and John Perceval also found inspiration within these walls. These artists pushed boundaries and challenged conventions. They were considered leaders of the Angry Penguins. This modernist movement was partly fueled by the Reeds. The Reeds even co-published a journal with poet Max Harris.
The Reeds’ vision extended beyond the farmhouse. In 1963 they commissioned a stunning new residence. Architect David McGlashan designed Heide II. It is considered one of Victoria’s finest examples of modernist architecture. The Reeds envisioned a home that was also a gallery. A place where art and life intertwined. They lived in Heide II until 1980. Then they made a momentous decision. They gifted most of Heide and a huge part of their art collection to the Victorian Government. This act created the public museum we see today.
Heide didn’t stop evolving. Heide III a new gallery building was added in 1993. Major redevelopments followed in 2005-2006. These renovations included a new education center. The gardens were also restored and expanded to include a sculpture park. The original gardens are heritage-listed now. They are a testament to the Reeds’ love for nature. The museum continues to support emerging artists. It honors the Reeds’ original vision. It’s a living testament to the power of art and its capacity to transform. It’s also a place where you can wander among sculptures created by Inge King Dennis Oppenheim Rick Amor and many more. So explore Heide Museum of Modern Art.
