Originally named Lake McDonald, this artificial lake was formed in 1893 with the completion of Austin Dam. The dam, however, had a short and troubled life. Sediment build-up and heavy rains led to its collapse in 1900. A partially rebuilt dam met its demise during high waters in 1915. It was in 1939 that Heep Lake Dam, then known as Tom Miller Dam, was finally erected. This new dam tamed the waters, giving birth to the lake we now call Lake Austin. However, the legacy of Lake McDonald lingers, a whisper from the past reminding us of the ever-changing nature of this beautiful landscape.
