What would a solicitor from Buckinghamshire, England, be doing naming a place in Melbourne after his birthplace? Hedgeley Dene Gardens, tucked away in the peaceful suburb of Malvern East, is a living testament to the enduring legacy of early settlers. Right here, amidst the tranquil ponds and winding paths, we uncover a tale that interweaves history, nature, and a touch of English charm. Hedgeley Dene Gardens, as we know it today, began its journey in 1877 when solicitor Edward Charsley acquired the land. He named it after his English birthplace, Hedgeley, a charming district in Buckinghamshire. Initially, the land was used as farmland. Later, it was transformed into a golf course, its natural waterholes serving as challenging hazards for golfers. In the early 1900s, the land was subdivided, and Malvern Council acquired a portion to be used first as a quarry and later as a municipal tip. The transformation of Hedgeley Dene Gardens from a tip to a tranquil oasis began after World War I. Returned soldiers planted Turkey Oaks, marking the beginning of the garden’s rehabilitation. By 1924, Hedgeley Dene Gardens had begun to take shape. Today, this historical gem, listed on the Victorian Heritage Register, stands as a testament to community effort and the enduring beauty of nature. As you stroll through the gardens, take a moment to appreciate the legacy woven into its very fabric. Hedgeley Dene Gardens is a testament to the enduring power of nature and a reminder that even in the heart of the city, tranquility awaits.
